Hessian start-up to deliver 12,000 cargo drones for Africa

Thousands of delivery drones from Wingcopter, a hessian start-up, will help provide supplies to the people in Africa, especially those living in remote corners of the continent. For this purpose, 12,000 Wingcopter drones are to be supplied over the next five years.

A German company based in Weiterstadt, Wingcopter aims to become a leading manufacturer of unmanned delivery aircrafts. It has now secured a bulk order from Africa to establish a delivery network covering 49 countries south of Sahara. This project represents the largest commercial application so far in the global delivery drone industry.

The drones will primarily perform deliveries to remote regions, supplying critical cargo such as medicine, vaccines, and other important products. “We are convinced that, with Continental Drones,  we will be able to unlock the African drone delivery market on a large scale, allowing us to jointly improve and save millions of lives,” said the company’s co-founder and CEO.

The battery-operated Wingcopter 198 is a crossover between a helicopter- and wing-based drone. According to the manufacturer’s data, it has a maximum speed of 145 km/h and a range of up to 110 km. The drone is able to deliver packages up to 6 kg.
