Wallstein Holding GmbH & Co. KG

Biggest commission in the history of the Wallstein Group: Climate-friendly district heating for 15,000 households powered by industrial waste heat!

On April 30, 2024, we were awarded our largest single contract to date, valued at about 28 million euros: the construction of a heat extraction system on the premises of the Integrated Steelworks of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe in Duisburg-Hamborn. The client and customer is the Niederrhein Duisburg/Dinslaken GmbH & Co.KG, a district heating network.

The new, 70-metre-long heat extraction plant will be operational before the 2026 heating season. It utilises up to 50 megawatts of residual heat from the exhaust air of the Sinter Plant 3 at the Duisburg steelworks, which is currently being released into the atmosphere and thus wasted.

In the future, this energy—reaching up to 200 gigawatt-hours per year—will be used as climate-neutral district heating for the cities of Dinslaken, Voerde, Duisburg, and Moers. This will meet the needs of approximately 15,000 households.

The implementation of this pioneering project marks not only a milestone in Wallstein's history, but also a significant step in the strategic expansion of its power technology product portfolio, transitioning from a heat exchanger manufacturer to a provider of complete systems.

By efficiently utilising industrial waste heat, we are making a valuable contribution to a sustainable and more climate-friendly energy supply in the region, helping to significantly reduce climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions.
